Clearwater, FL (September 16, 2015) Supply chain software developer Datex recently added multi-task interleaving to its popular warehouse management system, Datex Footprint® WMS.  In addition, Datex launched a labor management module developed to enable supply chain businesses to be able to better manage and enable workforce productivity.

Supply chain industry studies indicate that 50-60% of warehouse workers’ time is typically spent traveling.  Considered to be advanced functionality in warehouse management software, interleaving is typically used to reduce “deadheading”.  Deadheading happens when a warehouse worker completes a task at one location then heads to another area without performing any useful tasks along the way.  The practice of multi-task interleaving is more commonly used in operations where warehouse workers have permission to do both picking and putaway.  To make the best use of time and effort, these warehouse workers will handle one task such as picking then stop at another location nearby to handle another task, such as putaway.   This eliminates the need for another worker to travel to do a specific operation.  By utilizing interleaving, warehouse operators typically are able to recognize rather substantial gains in productivity within a relatively short period of time.  Often productivity dips initially during the learning curve as the workforce becomes accustomed to the new procedures then rebounds and increases after it becomes more familiar and comfortable.

Powered by Microsoft Windows Workflow Foundation, Datex Footprint® WMS uses a workflow based task management engine for more accurate, automated operations.  A supervisor or manager will be able to view tasks assigned and in process by each user in real time.  Changes to task assignment can be made easily and quickly from one screen.

Multi-task interleaving changes overall operations and can require scheduling, layout and flow in order to optimize results.  Datex interleaving and labor management systems are available now.  Product demonstrations by the software vendor can be requested on the Datex website.
