Amazon and Maersk’s Renewed Biofuel Partnership

Amazon and shipping giant A.P. Moller–Maersk are extending their sustainable shipping partnership into 2023 and 2024, marking four consecutive years of eco-friendly delivery solutions.

This year’s deal brings fresh innovations: Amazon will have access to Maersk’s methanol-enabled fleet, and the duo will use primary data to monitor fuel consumption and emission savings beyond just CO2. The collaboration aims to save a substantial 44,600 metric tons of CO2 emissions.

Amazon is on a mission to achieve 50% net-zero shipments by 2030, while Maersk aims for net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. With demand for green ocean transportation rising across various industries, this partnership sets a significant benchmark in accelerating the transition to sustainable shipping

How LA’s Busiest Port is Regaining Momentum

Great news for the Port of Los Angeles: cargo volumes are up for the first time in over a year! In August, the port saw a 3% year-over-year increase to 828,016 TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units).

This uptick comes after a new six-year contract was ratified between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union and the Pacific Maritime Association. The agreement has restored stability and instilled confidence among shippers, according to Port Executive Director Gene Seroka.

While the overall demand is still catching up due to high inventory levels, the port’s performance in key areas is promising. Loaded imports rose by 7%, and loaded exports surged by 22% compared to last year. It’s clear that when the Port of Los Angeles is “operating on all cylinders,” it’s the go-to destination for cargo.

Apple’s Suppliers Make the Switch: 100% Clean Energy Commitment

Apple is making remarkable strides in sustainability, with over 300 of its manufacturers now committed to using 100% clean energy. This initiative is part of Apple’s “Supplier Clean Energy Program,” which covers 90% of the company’s direct manufacturing expenses.

The tech giant aims to be entirely carbon-neutral by 2030, a goal that includes its global supply chain and the full lifespan of its products. To accelerate the transition to renewable energy in its supply chain, Apple has also invested in solar and wind projects in China and Japan.

On the product front, Apple has launched its first carbon-neutral Apple Watch, which utilizes clean electricity and sustainable materials in its manufacturing. This move is backed by Apple’s multi-billion-dollar green bond offering from last year and brings the company closer to achieving its ambitious 2030 sustainability goals.
